Cambridge IGCSE English as a Second Language

Our Cambridge IGCSE English as a Second Language course is suitable for students whose first language is not English. Non-native English speakers who are frequent users of the English language should take our IGCSE English Language course instead.

This course develops a student’s ability to understand and use English in a wide variety of situations. Learners will cover the key skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking. The English skills learnt can then be applied to other courses.

Syllabus and exams

This course follows the Cambridge IGCSE English as a Second Language syllabus 0511 or 0991. 

Exams take place in June and November.

Course advice

It is recommended that learners starting this Cambridge IGCSE English as a Second Language course are not first language speakers of English, but learners who use English as a lingua franca or language of study.

Learners are likely to have studied a curriculum such as the Cambridge Secondary 1 programme or equivalent national educational framework. Learners in England will normally have followed the Key Stage 3 programme of study within the National Curriculum for England.

Students should allow 150 hours plus assignment time to complete this course.
